THIS IS AN ARCHIVE POST FROM 2019.
For a while, we had been thinking about making a simple metal version of our wooden bicycle crates. After working with the heavy wooden crates, we knew one thing for sure: this time, we wanted to make something really lightweight. So we started thinking about aluminium.
The first designs came together quite quickly. I made the first prototypes from cardboard, and later I even spray-painted them, so we could get a better idea of how the final product would look. In the end, we selected two different designs: one with a retro style and another with a more modern look.
Then came the difficult part: finding the right manufacturer. We had already spent months struggling to find the right one for our wooden crates, so we more or less had to go through the same process all over again with the aluminium ones.
And it wasn’t only about the aluminium parts. We also wanted a durable finish, so we decided to use powder coating. But, of course, this didn’t go smoothly either. 😅
The prototypes looked beautiful, but when the first production pieces arrived, the powder coating wasn’t quite what we had expected. So we had to go through another round of discussions and corrections to get everything right.
The prototype on the left, the delivered final product on the right (well, obviously not the same 😅)
But finally, the crates were ready!
We have two designs, in black, white and red, and of course with our “trademark” shock cords in 6 colours.
And in a very creative moment, we officially named them BASIC. 😀
